Yellow Sac Spiders

Migrating over to the United States from Europe, the yellow sac spider is now one of the most commonly found arachnids in United States houses. These spiders are mostly active at night, choosing to remain in their silken nests during the day. The yellow sac spider is an active hunter, preying on insects and other spiders larger than themselves. 

Though the yellow sac spider does not seek out human interaction, they are known to bite humans if they feel threatened. This usually occurs when people accidentally encounter them while gardening, or when they get trapped between someone’s skin and sheets, clothing, or shoes. Yellow sac spider bites contain a venom that causes pain and irritation similar to a bee sting; however, the markings can often be mistaken for the bite of a brown recluse spider. 

How to Identify Yellow Sac Spiders

Yellow sac spiders are generally fairly small, with a body length of about 1/4 of an inch for both males and females. They have a pale beige or yellow coloring throughout their whole bodies except for the fangs and the tips of their legs, which are dark-brown. 

The yellow sac spider does not spin a traditional web to catch prey with, but rather a flattened silk tube in hidden places such as under logs or natural debris, within a leaf, or at the junction of a wall and ceiling when inside of a house. This nest is where they hide during the day, preferring to hunt at night.

How to Prevent Yellow Sac Spiders

With the yellow sac spider preferring to make its home in dark places that it can easily hide in, the best way to keep them from entering your home is to keep things tidy. Ensuring that your yard is trimmed and removing all natural debris, like logs and fallen leaves, reduces the number of natural nesting spots that the yellow sac spider has near your house. 

Fall is the most common season for the yellow sac spider to make its way into your home, as it seeks shelter from the cold. To prevent these home intrusions, you want to close off as many entry points as you can. Yellow sac spiders are small and can enter through cracks and holes in your house’s foundation, door frames, and window casings, so going through and ensuring that each one is properly sealed can go a long way in reducing pest infestations in your home. 

You should frequently check any dark areas in your home—such as basements, closets, underneath furniture, and in the corners of rooms—and sweep through them with a broom or vacuum to keep them clear of yellow sac spider nests. Making sure that general clutter is picked up also reduces the number of places that they can hide.
