Brown Recluse Spiders

Treatments for this pest are included in these services:

Brown recluse spiders, as they are aptly named, are very shy, avoid light, are active at night, and tend to build their webs in out-of-the-way places. Brown recluse spiders are more common in the Southern and Southeastern areas of the United States. If you believe you have a brown recluse in your home, it most likely hitched a ride into your home.

How to Identify Brown Recluse Spiders

Brown recluse spiders can have a violin-shaped mark (with the neck of the violin pointing backward) on the top side of the head region (cephalothorax). However, the mark is not always distinct, so it should not be used as an identifying character. A unique feature of recluse spiders is their six eyes, arranged in pairs in a semicircle, which can be seen with the use of a good hand lens. Most other spiders have eight eyes. These spiders make large, irregular, flattened, cobweb-type webs with thick strands extending in all directions.

Brown Recluse Prevention

Itโ€™s important to implement prevention methods to make your home undesirable for brown recluse spiders. Even though these reclusive spiders are shy they can deliver a painful bite when threatened that can lead to a necrotic wound if not handled quickly. You can keep brown recluse spiders out of your home by frequently dusting corners and knocking down any webs around your home. Breaking down boxes where brown recluse spiders are known to hide will also keep this spider from seeing your home as their potential home.
