Types of Scorpions in the Southwest
Though this guide can give you a better idea of what kind of scorpion is invading your California home or business, itโs always wise to leave scorpion identification to the pros. Without proper training and protective equipment, you may put yourself at risk of a sting if you venture too close. Even if the scorpion you find is dead, its stinger can still release venom if you accidentally prick yourself with it. The moment you find any type of scorpion on your property, stay away from it and contact PURCOR Pest Solutions for assistance.
Bark Scorpion
The bark scorpion is recognized as the most venomous species of scorpion in North America. Small and slender with thin pincers and tails, bark scorpions have two dark eyes on top of their heads and three pairs of lateral eyes. Theyโre typically tan in color, but they can range from plain, yellow-brown to dark-yellow with long stripes.
Stripe-Tailed Scorpion
The stripe-tailed scorpion is considered the most common scorpion species in the Southwest United States. Ranging between yellow and tan in color, the stripe-tailed scorpionโalso known as the devil scorpionโhas a dark, distinct triangle shape on its head. It is not as deadly as the bark scorpion, but its sting is still extremely painful.
Desert Hairy Scorpion
Though it does not often wander indoors, the giant desert hairy scorpion is found throughout the Southwest and North America. Measuring between 4 and 7 inches in length, these massive arachnids have tan or green-yellow bodies, yellow legs, and hairy tails. Despite their size, desert hairy scorpionsโ stings are painful but not as fatal as that of a bark scorpion.
Yellow Ground Scorpion
True to its name, the yellow ground scorpion is yellow in color with a dark-gray abdomen. Due to their coloring and slender pincers, yellow ground scorpions are often mistaken for their deadlier relatives, bark scorpions. While you can differentiate the species by the yellow ground scorpionโs thicker tail, itโs safer to leave identification to trained specialists.
Trust PURCOR Pest Solutions to Manage Scorpions
You may be tempted to keep scorpions out with do-it-yourself methods, but resist the urge. Also, you may come across one and receive a sting while you try to pest-proof your property.
Donโt take unnecessary risks; bring in the scorpion specialists from PURCOR Pest Solutions. While other pest control providers may be content with killing the insects that scorpions eat, our mission is to completely eliminate the stinging pests themselves. Our specialized products are designed to kill scorpions and prevent more from invading.
