Roof rats may be smaller than Norway rats, but the path of destruction and infestation they can leave is just as serious. Because these rats prefer to nest in the upper parts of buildings, many roof rats will take shelter in your attic where much of your homeโs wiring resides. Once inside they may chew on wires posing a serious fire risk in your home. Coupled with their droppings and urine that can pass on diseases, roof rats are a problem that should be dealt with quickly.
Identifying Roof Rats
Roof rats are smaller, more agile rats than Norway rats at about half a pound in comparison. Roof rats also boast a longer tail, with a pointy snout and longer ears than the Norway rat. In appearance, roof rats are lighter in color (usually a light gray).
Although scavengers by nature, roof rats prefer to eat seeds, nuts, vegetables, fruits, insects, invertebrates, and other inorganic matter. Roof rats are also a nocturnal species, which is why they are often not seen by homeowners during the day. They will also nest in higher areas, such as trees or attic spaces.
How to Prevent Roof Rats
As their name suggests, roof rats tend to use tree limbs and power lines to gain access to your roof and eventually find a way inside your home. Roof rats will likely set up shop in your attic and only venture out at night for food and water. Since roof rats seek shelter as the weather gets colder, the cleanliness of your home will not determine if roof rats will stay out of your home. However, sealing cracks that roof rats can access, especially along your roof is essential. Even the smallest crack should be addressed since roof rats, like most rodents, will simply chew and scratch at the hole until itโs big enough to climb through.
